What Is Missed Call Text Back?

When someone calls your business and you can't answer, an automatic SMS goes out right away. That's it. That tiny system gives callers who would otherwise move on a reason to stay with you.

If you're a contractor, I wrote a version just for you.

Why missed calls are killing your business

You're on a job site. Your hands are full. The phone rings. You can't answer. The caller leaves a voicemail — maybe. Then they hang up and call the next listing on Google.

The data backs this up brutally:

For a typical local service business, that means real revenue is walking away every month — silently — through unanswered calls. You'd never notice it because you never knew those leads existed.

How missed call text back works

The flow:

  1. Customer calls your business number.
  2. You don't answer (busy, driving, on another call, asleep, doesn't matter).
  3. The system detects the missed call.
  4. An automatic SMS goes to the caller's number: "Hey, sorry I missed your call. I'll be in touch shortly — quick text: what do you need?"
  5. Caller responds with their issue. You see it. You respond when you can. The thread is preserved.

That's the whole thing. The magic is in the speed (it goes out right away) and the prompt (text back, not "leave a voicemail").

Why I prefer texting to voicemail: In CallRail's survey, only 42% of consumers said they leave a voicemail. A missed-call text-back gives them an easy way to keep the conversation going while the urgency is still warm, instead of picking another vendor while they wait.

The exact SMS that works best

A simple template to start with:

Hey — sorry I missed your call. This is [Name] from [Business]. I'm on a job site but I'll get back to you shortly. Quick text: what do you need? I'll respond as fast as I can. — [Name]

Why this works:

Where to get it

The main options:

What to do if you're already getting missed-call texts but they're not converting

The fix is usually one of three things:

  1. Response is too slow. If you wait 4 hours to reply to the text reply, you might as well have not sent the initial SMS. Reply as fast as you can.
  2. Tone is too corporate. "Thank you for contacting [BUSINESS NAME]. Your call is important to us." kills the conversion. Sound human.
  3. No follow-up. If they don't respond to the initial text, send one casual follow-up the next morning. ("Hey, any luck getting in touch? Happy to chat.")
